Midnight Mary, win 4.20 Fakenham – BetVictor

Ffos Las 2.00 – Manorbank

Thomas Bellamy and Emma Lavelle team up with the 8-year-old who arrives here on the back of an emphatic success at Chepstow. He galloped clear by 22 lengths, looking to have plenty in hand at the line and now steps up in trip coming into this encounter.

Clearly for a horse of his age he hasn’t been the most straight-forward to train given how little of him we have seen, but with a clear path he can now kick on. This step up to 2m4f should be perfect for him, and under a penalty he can gallop his rivals into the ground here. The Olly Murphy trained, The Same looks the biggest danger on paper and has to be respected with Sean Bowen in the saddle.

Fakenham 2.40 – Cloudy Wednesday

It may well be Tuesday, but Cloudy Wednesday can brighten things up in this Handicap Chase over 2m5f. The 7-year-old got off the mark over C&D in February, and has been running with plenty of credit since.

A return to this venue is a clearly a positive, and has eased to a Handicap mark now only 1lb higher than when last successful, so on these terms has to be in the shake-up. If the track doesn’t turn too soft that will help his cause, and for a chaser who doesn’t have too many miles on the clock he could easily have more to offer.

Ffos Las 3.35 – Touchy Feely

We have Mares’ Handicap Hurdle action just shy of 2m6f, and this looks the perfect opportunity for the Nicky Henderson trained 6-year-old to get back to winning ways. She made a smooth transition from Bumpers to Hurdles when winning her first two starts over the smaller obstacles. with the second of those being a smart performance as she was upped in trip at Ludlow. After that, she was thrown in the deep end, as she tackled Grade 2 company in the Jane Seymour Hurdle at Sandown won by You Wear It Well.

She never landed a blow in that field, but that was a hot race, illustrated by the Jamie Snowden trained winner going on to win the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Eased down in Grade for Handicap debut, she can prove a lot better than a BHA rating of 118. Since last running she has undergone a wind operation and looks to have the perfect platform to continue  her progress now in much calmer waters. Daryl Jacob takes the ride and can steer her to victory here.

Fakenham 4.20 – Midnight Mary

The Mare, Midnight Mary has a very good record at Fakenham, and can enhance that here in the Norfolk National. Twice a winner at the track, she has taken well to fences since joining the Lucy Wadham yard, winning on Chase debut Wetherby, and then has filled the runner-up spot on three subsequent starts over the larger obstacles.

This is the biggest test of stamina she has ever been presented with, and she has shaped on all recent engagements that she can thrive over this marathon test. Returning to this venue is a positive, and any rain that hits the track shouldn’t be an inconvenience. Bryony Frost takes the ride on this unexposed 7-year-old who should have a lot more to offer.

Ffos Las 4.45 – Star Flyer e/w

Warren Greatrex has bounced back to form this season, with many of his string now firing on all cylinders. One horse who has been simmering rather than boiling is Star Flyer. Things are yet to click for the 6-year-old who makes his second start in Handicap company, but the key here could be the step up in trip to just shy off 3m.

He is an unexposed sort who hinted at Newcastle and Fontwell in the winter at trips around two and a half miles, that a proper test of stamina can bring out the best in him. It is still early days in regards to the Handicap ranks, and eased to a mark of 102  It wouldn’t be a surprise if he brought more to the table now upped to this trip for the first time. Thomas Bellamy takes the ride for the Lambourn handler, and he looks to have each-way possibilities here.

Don’t forget, Ed will be back soon giving his thoughts and best bets for Chester’s May Festival, which kicks off on Wednesday.
